After 12 years managing my own tutoring business, I knew there had to be a better way to support the professional work tutors do every day.
When I left teaching to start my own tutoring business, I quickly realised just how different tutoring was from classroom teaching. In a classroom, teachers work within a structured curriculum and plan learning for a whole class. Tutoring is different. Every student arrives with their own combination of strengths, gaps, misconceptions and learning needs.
A student may be in Year 6 but still be missing an important concept from Year 4. Another may understand most of a topic but have one small misconception preventing them from moving forward. As tutors, our job is to work out where that student actually is in their learning and how best to move them forward. And that takes considerable professional judgement.
What 12 Years in Tutoring Taught Me
Over the next 12 years, I grew Optimise Learning from a solo tutoring business into a team of 80 tutors working with students across Australia, before eventually selling the business. As the business grew, I saw tutoring from every angle — as a teacher, tutor, business owner and someone responsible for maintaining high-quality, personalised learning across a large team. And one thing became increasingly clear. There were plenty of tools available to help us run a tutoring business. We could find software for scheduling, invoicing, payments and administration. There were also thousands of educational resources available online.
But there were far fewer professional tools designed specifically around the actual teaching work tutors do.
- Understanding where a student is.
- Identifying the gaps that matter.
- Working out the appropriate next step.
- Setting meaningful learning goals.
- Planning targeted teaching.
- Finding resources at the right level.
- Monitoring progress.
- And communicating that progress clearly to parents.
Much of this still relied on the individual tutor piecing everything together themselves.
Tutoring Needs Different Tools
One of the things I came to understand very clearly is that resources designed for classroom teaching aren’t always ideal for tutoring. Tutoring is highly personalised. We aren’t necessarily teaching what comes next for the class. We’re teaching what comes next for this particular student.
That might mean stepping back to address an earlier prerequisite skill before moving forward. It might mean identifying why a student is repeatedly making the same error. Or it might mean recognising that a student has already mastered a concept and is ready to move ahead. That’s why good tutoring isn’t simply about having more worksheets.
It’s about having the right information, the right teaching focus and the right resource for that student at that point in their learning. That was the gap I wanted TutorPro Hub to help address.
Why We’re Starting With Assessment and Diagnosis
TutorPro Hub is launching with professional tools designed to help tutors better understand a student’s learning and turn that information into targeted next steps. Our first release includes curriculum-aligned mathematics diagnostic assessments for Foundation to Year 6, mapped to the Australian Curriculum.
Tutors can also upload completed primary mathematics assessments or primary writing samples for analysis. The purpose isn’t to test students for the sake of testing them. It’s to make the information gathered through assessment useful. A student struggling with a current topic may be missing a prerequisite concept from an earlier year level. Simply reteaching the current topic may not address the underlying difficulty.
Targeted tutoring starts with understanding what the student already knows, where the gaps are and what should be prioritised next.

This is what personalised tutoring already does well. Our aim is to make that process more structured, more efficient and easier to maintain over time.
Built Specifically for Tutors
TutorPro Hub isn’t another scheduling or invoicing system. There are already established platforms that do those jobs well. We’re concentrating on something different: the professional teaching workflow behind effective tutoring.
And this is only the beginning.
Over time, TutorPro Hub will continue to develop tools and resources specifically for personalised tutoring — including resources designed around particular learning needs and curriculum skills rather than simply providing another large library of generic worksheets. The goal isn’t more. It’s more targeted.
The Professional Tools I Wish We’d Had
When I think back over my 12 years running Optimise Learning, I think about how much time we spent developing systems, creating resources, analysing student learning and trying to maintain consistency while still ensuring every student received genuinely personalised support.
I often wish we’d had access to professional tools built specifically for that work.
Now, we’re building them.
